CHARITY EVENT IN MEMORY OF CRAIG
GOWANS
(U-17s and above)
SFA referee, Tam Carter, is organising a
5-a-side tournament at the Power League in Portobello in
memory of Craig Gowans, the promising young footballer who
died in a tragic accident at the Falkirk FC training ground
three years ago.
Carter, who referees in the minor-grade leagues, said: “Craig’s
parents, John and Sheila, have asked me to organise this
event in memory of their son who was taken from them in
this accident that took place on July 8th, 2005. I am hoping
32 teams (U-17s and above) will enter for the event which
will be held on Friday, June 20 and the entrance fee is
£30 per team, with all money raised going to the Sick
Kids Appeal. The tournament will be based on a round-robin
format in groups, with the qualifiers going on to the knock-out
stages. I think it will last more than two hours and I hope
it will be an enjoyable occasion for everyone who takes
part in it. It is in memory of this promising young footballer
who was a pupil at Stewart’s Melville College in Edinburgh.
More than £4000 has already been raised for the appeal
and an auction will also be held on the night of the 5-a-side
tournament with donations coming from several top Scottish
football clubs. The event will start at 7.00pm and anyone
wanting information should ring me on 07928 776711! Each
team that enters the event will be limited to seven players
each. It promises to be a great event in memory of a wonderful
young man!”
